Episcopalians Take a Hike

This is just a brief summary of our hike with local Episcopal parishes on April 12 up in Fallbrook and a look to the future. We walked along the Santa Margarita River for a few miles. You may remember that this was a terrifically hot day with Santa Ana winds; we were fortunate that the path was mostly shaded with trees. Had the hike been anywhere else, we probably would have had to cancel it. There were about thirty of us, mostly from Trinity and Grace-San Marcos, but also some from St. John's in Fallbrook.

There were a couple of distinctly Episcopalian aspects to the hike. First, flowers were blooming, and one of note called "Canterbury Bells" was out. It's a purple flower shaped like a bell. It's pictured on the upper left. (For those of you who may not know, Canterbury, England is the home of Canterbury Cathedral, mother church of the Anglican Communion, of which we are a part.)

One thing we didn't get a picture of were the so-called "Lord's Candle" yuccas which were blooming. This is a remarkable yucca in that the plant is fairly close to the ground until springtime when it sends a shoot up vertically (much like the more well-known 'agave' or 'century plant') which grows from the ground up to 6 or 8 feet in a matter of weeks. This shoot then bears some white flowers. This yucca looks like the Paschal Candle (which also shows up in our churches during spring time!) Hence the name, "Lord's Candle."

We're planning on another hike later in the year - hopefully one again accessible to most age groups. Keep an eye out for a future announcement, and, in the meantime, enjoy the pictures below.
