Bishop Mathes' "Official" Annual Visit

Photos from Trinity Photo Archives

The word "Episcopal" means "bishop." That might be a clue that bishops are important in our church. The bishop is part of the structure of our church, overseeing a particular geographic area of the church. Bishops also have particular historical and sacramental roles, meaning there are things that only they can do.

But there's more to a bishop than just the function. Every Episcopal church has a chair set aside just for the bishop (can you find Trinity's Bishop chair?). That chair reminds us that we are not Christians all by ourselves and for ourselves. We have a part to play in the wider church, including the responsibility to care about our brothers and sisters elsewhere. When the Bishop visits, he (or she) brings not only the sacramental role, but also the symbolic presence of the Christians beyond our small community.

On June 8th, Trinity welcomed the Rt. Rev. Jim Mathes on his annual official visit here. The Bishop was present at both services, presiding over the Eucharist, preaching, and offering the sacrament of Confirmation at the 10:00 service.

We also had a chance to hear about the business and activities of the Episcopal Church and even the wider Anglican Communion when Bishop Mathes spoke at the 9:00 forum. Some photos of his visit are posted below.
