Habitat for Humanity

Photos & Article by Paul DesForges

On June 6, a group of Trinity volunteers gave up their Saturday freedom to work on a Habitat for Humanity (H for H) project in Oceanside.

We started at about 8:30am and finished about 3pm. We spent the day framing and by the time we were done, could really see some significant improvements. Working under the direction of our skilled supervisor, we completed our work at a competent level of quality and with no injuries.

H for H's Oceanside project consists of 18 homes that they are building on land donated by the city of Oceanside. As usual, our volunteers worked side by side with the future homeowners of these homes. It was really something to see how excited these people were to finally be able to own their own home.

The way it works is typically the city will donate the land and H for H builds the homes. In order to qualify for a home, the family's total income cannot be more that 60% of the average income for the area and they must have a good credit history. Habitat provides the loan at 0% interest. If the homeowner decides to sell his house in the first 10 years, they are required to sell it back to H for H at the original purchase price.

H for H is a great way to donate your time. You can actually see the fruit of your labor and the effect that it has on a first-time home buyer. We try to have a Trinity Work Day with Habitat for Humanity at least once a year, so stay tuned for the next opportunity if this interests you.
