Buntu Christian Community Development Initiatives was founded in 2004 by Bishop Ernest Shalita and his wife Joy. It carries out its work in the Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda, which is where Bishop Shalita served as the Bishop of the Diocse of Muhabura for 12 years.
The Kisoro District at a Glance:
Kisoro is located in Uganda, between the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and the Rwanda to the south. There are no industries in the district; most people survive on subsistence farming. The effects of widespread unemployment and poverty have been compounded by the devastation of AIDS, leaving orphaned children to be raised by their elderly grandparents or teenage siblings.
The Buntu Mission: To bring the practical gospel of Jesus Christ through life transforming initiatives that bring lasting hope.
The Buntu Objectives:
-
To equip communities with knowledge and skills for community development and improvement of standard of life.
-
To promote and protect the rights of orphans, children, women, disabled and the poor
-
To fight illiteracy by providing formal and basic education for both children and adults
-
To promote spiritual growth and equip communities with tools and strategies for better social and moral behavior
-
To promote activities that prevent and mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS and other preventable diseases.
-
To protect and conserve the natural environment through better agricultural practices.
The future:
$5000 will allow Bishop Shalita to purchase land next to the school in order to expand. Several graduates from the school are working to raise money to go to the university to continue their education.
How Trinity helps:
Trinity partners with the Buntu Community by sponsoring children in primary and secondary education. Donations provide uniforms and supplies, as well as assist in providing the salaries for instructors at the school.
