Several parishioners had the unusual opportunity to participate in a Mayan Rubbing Workshop hosted by parishioner Bob Braaton. Bob lived in Guatemala for nearly twenty years, fell in love with the Mayan culture and became an expert in the remnants of this ancient civilization.
The workshop consisted of a brief video presentation on the Mayan civilization, a short talk by Bob on the genesis of rubbings and then a demonstration of how to make them. Parishioners set up their workstation and spent the rest of the morning making their own Mayan rubbing(s). It was an educational and rewarding day for all.
A brief summary of Bob's learning experience in his own words:
The first time I walked through the Great Plaza of the ruins of Copan in Honduras I was stunned by the beauty, majesty, and mystery of the Mayan monuments called stelae and their hieroglyphics. The mystery of the Mayans and the beauty of their art became a lifelong interest of mine.
People come from all over the world to see the Mayan ruins and they crave some representation of this art. I carved a series of reproductions of Mayan art and made rubbings from the carvings which I sold to the tourists.
After returning to the US, I stored the carvings and have never used them or offered them for public display for over twenty years. Now, as a fund raiser for Trinity, I will be conducting a Mayan Rubbing Workshop in which you can make your own Mayan rubbing and help Trinity at the same time!
