Music At Trinity

Choir & Choristers
Parish Choir and Trinity Choristers celebrating Lessons and Carols

Music is an integral part of this parish's worship and offering to God, seeking to express what is otherwise inexpressible. In response to the Psalm, "Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness," and its corollary, "Worship the Lord in holiness of beauty", we offer the best music possible respecting the intelligence and emotional richness of human beings.

The choirs (Parish Choir and Trinity Choristers) sing at the Choral Eucharist from September through Trinity Sunday. At present, the Trinity Choristers sing once a month and at major feasts such as All Saints' Day and Easter Day. We maintain a good "parish church" standard, and sing a wide range of church music reflecting high standards of the liturgical art. The choir and organ music list include the works of composers from all parts and ages of the Western Church: from Palestrina, Byrd, and Victoria, to Willan, Howells, and Leighton, by way of Brahms, Fauré, and the Victorian stalwarts such as Parry and Stanford.

At major feasts a Solemn Mass is often celebrated with a choral setting of the Ordinary with the plainsong Propers taken from the English Gradual or Anglican Use Gradual. Sung Masses have included the Byrd Mass for 4 voices, Haydn Missa Brevæ, and the Missa Pro defunctis (plainsong). Once fully established, the Trinity Choristers will also be fully integrated into the cycle of major choral services.

Trinity Episcopal Church is one of the few places in San Diego where liturgical music can be heard regularly as an integral part of the liturgy for which it was composed. A well-rehearsed choir in formal dress may produce beautiful sounds on a concert stage, but sacred music can be appreciated fully only when it is part of a complete liturgical setting. We are fortunate to have the wholehearted support of the Rector and Vestry in the attempt to maintain this tradition.

Choir Recruitment

The Choir at Trinity needs you!

We are always in need of new members for our Parish Choir. At present, we need to continue developing the numbers to maintain our high standards. Choir rehearsal is on Thursday evenings from 7:00 until 9:00. There is a sung service every Sunday morning and the occasional Sunday evening for Evensong. We are not a professional choir and no one is expected to attend all the time, but members are strongly encouraged to be committed.

If you live in the San Diego North County area and are interested in joining the choir, why not come along to a sung service and speak to David Lewis, Organist and Choirmaster, afterwards?

Help spread the word!

The growth of the music program will continue and expand by getting the word out to the surrounding community. Please tell other families you know about the choir and all it offers. This might include neighbors, friends of yours and colleagues at work. If you need an information package about the music program, the music staff will be pleased to supply the information. The many musical, educational and social benefits that being in a good music program can provide are available to all community members. Do not hesitate to email David Lewis if you have any further inquiries.
