Trinity Tours Palomar Observatory
Saturday, Sep 11
Mark your calendar for a special Trinity fellowship event at Palomar Mountain Observatory.
We are in the midst of planning a personal tour of the observatory lead by Rick Burruss, son of our own Millie Burruss. Rick is an astrophysicist who occasionally works at the observatory.
The Palomar Observatory is perhaps the world's most famous astronomical observatory. Since the 1930s it has been, and continues to be, a center of astronomical research.
The Palomar Observatory's Visitor Center contains numerous exhibits and displays on the telescopes and discoveries made with them. Several of the observatory's exhibits are on touch-screen computer kiosks. They include a tour of the telescopes of Palomar Observatory, a tour of the solar system, and an exhibit on Supernovae / Gamma-Ray Bursts and a display of images from Palomar.
Our plans are to meet at Trinity early in the morning and carpool to Palomar Mountain. While there are plenty of curves on the drive to the mountain, the views are quite beautiful. There are plenty of picnic areas close to the observatory, so when we arrive, we will first enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch before beginning our tour of the observatory.
Please note that the interior of the 200-inch dome is kept at nighttime temperatures (for an elevation of 5,500 feet!), so you will want to dress accordingly.
We will be providing more details on this exciting event as the date nears, but for now, be sure to set aside Saturday, Sept 11th, so you don't miss out!

Local Quilt Panels for World AIDS Day
Workshop in Autumn
As most of you are aware, World AIDS Day (Dec. 1) has been observed in recent years at Trinity with a memorial service celebrated by Bishop Mathes and music provided by "Through the Storm," the North County gospel choir. Several portions of the "AIDS Memorial Quilt" have been displayed at these services as a reminder of those who have succumbed to the horror that is the world-wide AIDS epidemic, particularly in Africa, and as an inspiration to those of us - too many of us - whose lives have been touched and changed by it.
This year, we're encouraging greater involvement in the commemoration by inviting each of the North County Episcopal churches to make a small panel of its own and bring it to the service on Dec.1, where it will be blessed by the bishop, joined with the other "local" panels, and sent to Atlanta to become part of the larger quilt. At this writing, six churches have already agreed to participate!
Cindy Shamel, as a member of the Project Committee, will soon present a section of the quilt for the congregation to decorate. (The decoration can be anything from a prayer to the names of lost loved ones from your congregation or community.) We plan to hold a "Creative Workshop" in the early autumn to answer questions and help with ideas, so you'll have plenty of assistance and encouragement along the way. You might also want to take a look at the quilt's website: www.aidsquilt.org.
This promises to be an uplifting, Spirit-filled project and an opportunity for our congregations to work together to create a permanent remembrance of those lost to AIDS. Please feel free to contact Cindy (858/673-1615) if you have questions or comments about the project.

Sing Joyfully Bookplates
Available Now
Our wonderful new songbook, Sing Joyfully!, offers the Trinity community with a wonderful new opportunity to give thankfully to the glory of God and honor loved ones--while also supporting our music program. Bookplates with the Trinity Church logo are available for purchase for $5.00 and may be personalized according to your instructions.
Look for Tom Cutrer at coffee hour, and he will show you samples and take your order. Order forms will also be available at the back of the church, so that you can place your order and payment in the collection plate. Our goal is to place bookplates in all two hundred of our songbooks and, thus, underwrite the printing cost of this addition to our worship service.

ICS Food of the Month
The Escondido Interfaith Community Services (ICS) food pantry need is even greater. Demand is up 50% while contributions are down by 50%. So, please bring any non-perishable, packaged or canned foods to the rear of the worship area at church. We will get them to those who need them.
