Mark 10:35-45

Mark 10:35-45

Background:  Returning to a popular Gospel theme, we see two of Jesus’ closest disciples, James and John, demonstrating they haven’t understood anything he has said.  They ask for places of honor in his future kingdom, which irritates the other disciples who also don’t understand what Jesus’ kingdom will cost him.  Jesus again calls his disciples to follow him on his way, which will lead to suffering and death.

Think and talk:  James and John don’t understand what Jesus means when he invites them to drink his cup, but they still want follow him.  Are there things about the Gospel that don’t make sense to you?  What makes the Gospel nonetheless compelling?  What does Jesus’ offering himself as a ransom mean to you?

Looking around:  Jesus’ invitation makes it clear that our participation, and not just our belief, is what makes us his disciples.  How, then do we participate in his death?  Look for examples this week of the truth of the cross, that is, the sacrifice that leads to life.  Are there people who exemplify Christ’s calling in our world today?  What about your life shows this?
